Song Of The Day: 3/22/12 (Young, Wild and Free)

Today’s song of the day is Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa’s, “Young, Wild and Free” featuring Bruno Mars. The song is from the soundtrack to their Cheech and Chong style film, “Mac and Devin Go To High School”.  I haven’t seen the movie, but I love the album and I love this song. It’s so fun and catchy. It kind of makes me long for the days when I was young, wild and free. Now I’m staying late at work most nights and squeezing in blog posts, then I go home, eat dinner, watch some TV and go to sleep and do that same thing the next day. I must say though, I am a very lucky man. I have the best future wife in the world and she makes even the mundane, exciting and enjoyable. So maybe I’m no longer young, wild and free, but I am old, happy and loved. I’ll take that any day!!!

3000 Is Coming……

At least a guy can dream huh? I and every OutKast/Andre 3000 fan has been waiting for a new album from both OutKast and Andre 3000 (solo) for almost 6 years now. The has been a very draining experience for the Kast faithful. For about 4 of those 6 years we were dragged along in the belief that Big Boi would release a solo album just about every month until it was FINALLY released back in July 2010 and boy was it worth the wait!!! Big Boi’s album “Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty” was in my opinion the best, most sonically charged and different album of that year along with Janelle Monae’s “The ArchAndroid”. Both albums were highly praised by critics and fans alike, yet got snubbed at all award shows for the big awards. They were among the top 3 highest rated albums of the year on Metacritic, a website that aggregates a score based off of all reviews that have been submitted on the alum from all major sources.

Anyway, I digress. In 2010 we finally got Big Boi’s album, but now we are still waiting on Andre 3000’s solo album……and OutKast’s album, but if Dre can drop his solo album, I can wait a little longer on an OutKast joint. Over the past 6 years, Andre hasn’t been totally in hiding. He has been featured on 21 tracks to date, teasing us 1 song at a time.

Here is a complete list of every song that has attempted to hold me over till Andre’s grand return:

1. DJ Unk – Walk It Out (Remix) feat. Andre 3000 & Jim Jones
2. Devin The Dude – What A Job feat. Andre 3000 & Snoop Dogg
3. Jay-Z – 30 Something (Remix) feat. Andre 3000 & Ice Cube
4. Lloyd – I Want You (Remix) feat. Andre 3000 & NaS
5. Rich Boy – Throw Some D’s (Remix) feat. Andre 3000, Jim Jones, Nelly, Murphy Lee & The Game
6. UGK – International Player’s Anthem (I Choose You) feat. OutKast
7. Fonzworth Bentley – Everybody feat. Andre 3000, Kanye West & Sa-Ra
8. Big Boi – Royal Flush feat. Andre 3000 & Raekwon
9. John Legend – Green Light feat. Andre 3000
10. OutKast – Da Art Of Storytellin’ (Part 4) feat. Marsha Ambrosius
11. Andre 3000 – All Together Now
12. Big Boi – Lookin’ For Ya feat. Andre 3000 & Sleepy Brown

17. Lloyd – Dedication To My Ex feat. Andre 3000 & Lil’ Wayne
18. Lil Wayne – Interlude feat. Tech N9ne & Andre 3000
19. Drake – The Real Her feat. Andre 3000 & Lil Wayne
20. Young Jeezy – I Do feat. Andre 3000 & Jay-Z
21. B.o.B – Play The Guitar feat. Andre 3000

Now don’t get me wrong these songs……at least Andre’s verses on them have all been awesome, but it’s not the same as having just him and an album of his genius. Big Boi and other sources close to Dre have alluded to the release of this long awaited solo album for years now, always saying it will be out this year and then the year comes and goes……and nothing, but I think this year is FINALLY the year. Andre seems to be everywherwe lately!!! Aside from ramping up his featurings lately. He has been appearing in commercials for Gillette. The commercials are below:

It seems to me he’s using these commercials and the increase of featurings to get himself back into the spotlight after so many years of laying low. Also Gorillaz, James Murphy and Andre himself have a song called “DaYaThing”, as part of a Converse “Three Artists. One Song.” campaign, being released on February 23rd!!! I REALLY think he’s coming back and SOON. I CAN’T WAIT ANYMORE!!! I have sat around SO many nights……and days imagining what his new album might be like, knowing that whatever I could think up would never touch the awesomeness that Andre 3000 has been cooking up and it seems that I will soon be able to feast my ears on the Dre Buffet!!! I just NEED some real music from one of my only living idols. Come on 3 Stax and hit us with what you got!!!

What’s New In Music?

Boy, oh boy, it seems like it has been so slow the last couple months, when it comes to music. It’s actually made it quite hard for me to come up with material to write about. It feels like there has been barely any noteworthy albums that have come out since mid November. But actually there has been a bunch of pretty good albums. Kate Bush’s “50 Words For Snow” was great, as usual. I mentioned in my top ten albums of the year post last week, naming it number 1. There were a couple good releases in December, worth listening to, with albums like “Red” by Dia Frampton and “The Dreamer/The Believer” by Common. Also Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa released a soundtrack album to their upcoming film, a “black” Cheech and Chong take off “Mac and Devin Go To High School” and is better than I’d though it would be. Lot’s of catchy song’s about pot smoking, but what would you expect from Snoop in a Cheech and Chong style film’s soundtrack?

Come to think of it Rap has has had a few good months, recently, which Hip-Hop desperately needed, because Hip-Hop has been, well, dead for years now. Some really good, new Rap albums I’ve been listening to include Eminem’s new protege Yelawolf’s debut “Radioactive”. Childish Gambino a.k.a. Donald Glover from the TV show, Community, who you’ve NEVER heard like this before, released a killer debut album called “Camp”. Idle Warship’s is a genre bending Hip-Hop group consisting of Talib Kweli and female singer, Res, who released their debut album, “Habits Of The Heart” back in mid October on Spotify before it even hit the store shelves, to create a buzz. It seems like all the good, new music is coming from new acts and a lot from Rap for a change. This is what Rock needs. Rock has had really no major albums come out in recent memory and all the Rock radio stations are switching format away from Rock. Rock really needs a renaissance. If Rap can do it, so can Rock. The Black Keys new album, “El Camino” is really good and they have been getting quite a bit of attention and are even on the cover of the current issue of Rolling Stone. Foster The People are another Rock band that have been holding it down on the pop radio waves with their surprise, smash hit “Pumped Up Kicks” from their album “Torches”.

I began writing this blog post as a question of what to do when there is not much good music coming out, but in the end, I realized that there is quite a bit of pretty decent music out right now. However the questions remains the same, what to do in times, when you thirst for something new for your ears to feast on and there really isn’t anything catching you ears? What I do is go back and listen to old artists that I’ve always wanted to, but never got into and start to dig through their catalouges. While it might not be “new” music, it’s new to me. So, I’ve been listening to the above mentioned albums and some “old” music by Kate Bush, The Allman Brothers and some other older artists. I should note that just because there may not be any major releases out doesn’t mean there is nothing good out. It just takes a bit more digging to find something new and fresh. What do you recommend I listen to right now? Have you heard anything new and interesting? Anything oldy, but goody?

These are some of the albums I’ve been listening to that you all should check out. There’s a little something here for everyone.:
