Been listening to a lot of Prince lately, so I wanted to share one of his songs for today’s song of the day, but it turns out a lot of Prince songs aren’t available on Youtube. I guess Prince is strict about that. The song I picked, that I was actually able to find, was one of his early hits, “Bambi”. Get funky with it and check it out!!!
Every now and then I come across musical synchronicities. The most recent involved Genesis/Phil Collins/Peter Gabriel. I’ve been thinking it was time to dig into Genesis’ and Phil Collins’ music catalouges. I’ve also been hearing a lot about Peter Gabriel lately. First I started seeing ads for him and a live performance he was doing, online. I also recently checked out a collaboration he did with Kate Bush, who I love, on Youtube, the song “Don’t Give Up”. Then my boss mentioned that Gotye sounded kind of like Peter Gabriel. And finally a contestant on The Voice sang the Peter Gabriel song, “In Your Eyes” the other night, which my fiancee actually thought was a Phil Collins song, originally. Then today I asked my boss (a huge music fan) if he had any Peter Gabriel CDs I could borrow, because Spotify didn’t have any of his music and I wanted to try getting into him after I worked though some of Genisis’ catalogue of music.
Little did I know throughout all of this that Peter Gabriel was the original lead singer of Genesis before Phil Collins took over for him in 1975. I just happened to be hearing a lot about Genesis/Phil Collins/Peter Gabriel lately, in completely unrelated ways. I knew Phil Collins was the lead singer of Genesis, but never knew that he was preceded by Peter Gabriel. I found this out while I was listening to Genesis today and was doing a little research on them with Wikipedia. I like to know at least a little about as many artists as possible. It’s just so crazy how all of this was connected and I had no idea, but came upon all of it simultaneously. It’s funny because one of the last musical synchronicities I experienced, involved Kate Bush, who is also indirectly connected to this Genesis/Phil Collins/Peter Gabriel synchronicity. Double synchronicity!!! Anyway, this brings me to today’s song of the day, “That’s All” by Genesis. This is one of their most popular songs. I heard it on the radio the other day and it’s been stuck in my head ever since. That’s all.
Today’s song of the day is “City Grrrl” by CSS (Cansei de Ser Sexy) an awesome Brazilian “Dance” Rock group. I first found out about them when I saw them in concert with my boss, when they opened up for Sleigh Bells. Below is a picture I was actually able to get with the lead singer, Lovefoxxx.
I liked Sleigh Bells, but I enjoyed CSS’ set ever more. It was so energenic, fun and the songs were really good. A few months later, in August, they came out with a new album “La Liberación” and I really like it!!! Great music to party and and dance to. My favorite song from it was “City Grrrl”. It’s just so catchy and fun. It was released as a single a few months ago and has a respectable amount of views on Youtube considering that they aren’t a very popular band. They should be though. I wish that more great underground stuff like this got radio play. Check out the video. What do you think?
I had A LOT of trouble deciding what to make today’s song of the day. Originally I was gonna post a Gnarls Barkley song and ended up surfing Youtube for Pussycat Dolls songs because Cee-Lo wrote and sings background vocals in their hit song, “Dont Cha” and the video suggester in Youtube lead me to that, from Gnarls Barkley, which then led me to listen to the will.i.am produced and featured track “Beep” also by the Pussycat Dolls, which led me to Spotify to listen to one more Pussycat Dolls song. Yea, I know, it’s pretty shameful how much Pussycat Dolls I just listened too, but I always say, I listen to EVERYTHING. Then I was going to post a Whitney Houston song, because I realized that with my Grammy series of songs of the day last week, I never got a chance to do that, but then I got worried that maybe it might be overkill with all the news and radio play she’s gotten in the last week. Although it’s all deserving. Now I’m thinking I should share my favorite song by her. You know what? I’ll do that tomrrow. But with all the confusion over what song to share today, I just said screw it, I’m gonna share one of my own songs. I recorded this song “Just Like That” about 5 years ago when I used to rap. I rapped it over a Chromeo instrumental track. My Rap name was DanMar and this is the last song I ever recorded. Although I’m working on getting back on my musical path and learning to play guitar and make my own music, not really rap anymore, but write and sing my own songs. This is one of my favorites of mine and one of my most fun and upbeat songs. What do you guys think it?
