Music To Get You Through The Trump Years…

Hi all,

It’s been a while since I’ve posted, but I felt inspired to share a playlist I procured. The last couple of years and particularly the last few weeks have been terrible for our country, future, the world, and our sanity. With all the disgusting things being done now by the Trump administration and some of his uniformed and bigoted supporters and how far it has and will continue to set us back, I find myself more hopeless and angry than ever. When I feel like I’ve reached a breaking point, I’ve been listening to a playlist I created called “Revolution” which is exactly what we need! We have tried and are still trying peaceful revolution via protests and political discussions via social media and in person, but it doesn’t seem to have gotten us anywhere. “Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.” (JFK). You can save and listen to this playlist whenever you want by clicking “Follow” at the top of the playlist in Spotify. The playlist is embedded at the bottom of this article.

There are songs on this playlist that address the Democratic Primary and the rigging, cheating, and sandbagging of Bernie Sanders. Thanks a lot Hillary, DNC, and the media for screwing us of the only decent person to run for President in 2016 and probably since the 50s or 60s! Bernie would have won! The opening song “Disco Inferno” is a direct deference to Bernie, as it became an unofficial anthem for his campaign and is a fun note to start such a dark and angry playlist on. Bern baby Bern! There are songs that directly address Trump and his Facist mentality. There are songs that address the government at large and how we got to where we are. Many of these songs express the anger that is stirring and that we will need to harness to overthrow the current regime and shape a better future than we have had for the past 30-40 years. There are songs about our dying planet. There are protest songs. There are songs about the militarism of the Police. There are songs about race. Black Lives Matter! The only song missing from the playlist is Prince’s Black Lives Matter protest song “Baltimore” since his music is unavailable on Spotify. If you want the full experience you can insert that song after Bruce Springsteen and before Pussy Riot. There are also songs about income inequality. And  toward the latter half of the album, there are songs of hope and love, which is just what we need. Obama was a good step further and he made some good changes, which are now being undone, but he never went far enough. He wasn’t allowed to because he was still owned by Wall Street and Corporations like almost every other politician. He answered to them ultimately. Not us. We need a real Progressive in office who doesn’t take money from Wall Street or Corporations, who can’t be bought, and whose only concern is the betterment of life for the poor and middle class of this country. Like Bernie! Bernie and/or Tulsi Gabbard 2020! We shall overcome…someday, but until then, I hope this playlist is cathartic and helps you push through the dark times we are living in. Power to the people! Viva la revolucion!

R.I.P. Robin Gibb

Disco took another hit this week with the death of Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees, one of the biggest Disco acts of all time. He passed away yesterday due to cancer at the age of 62. The Bee Gees are known for their impeccable harmonies and accessible brand of Disco. They have sold over 100 million records and in a 2 year span in the late 70s racked up 6 consecutive #1 singles.

Some of their hits include “You Should Be Dancing”, “Stayin’ Alive”, “More Than A Woman”, “How Deep Is Your Love”, “Emotion” and more. Some of those hits come from the 70s Disco film “Saturday Night Fever” starring John Travolta. The soundtrack for the movie won Album of the Year at the Grammys in 1979. They also starred in the 1978 film adaptation of the Beatles album “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”, which had a little “Abbey Road” thrown in for good measure.

As I write this post I am listening to the Bee Gees and realizing how many great hits they had and how Disco got a really bad wrap over the years. Between the death of Donna Summers and now Robin Gibb, I’ve been listening to more Disco than usual and it’s hard to not get caught up in these awesome, funky Disco grooves. What can I say, I got Disco fever!!! A lot of us did at some point and that is due in large part to the Bee Gees and Donna Summer, of which we have been dealt two loses from in one week. R.I.P. Robin Gibb.

Follow Me On Spotify!!!

Spotify is an amazing music subscription service that puts millions and millions of songs at your finger tips, instantly. It’s like Pandora Radio, but better because you can choose exactly what you want to listen to (artist, album, song) and not be forced to listen to what Pandora thinks you want to listen to, but if that’s what you want, Spotify also has their own Pandora style radio stations as well.

I’ve used it basically since it first became available in North America, back in July 2011. It started in Europe first and was such a huge success there, it’s now spreading worldwide. It’s also a great place to share music and playlists with your friends. Recently, they have also added really cool music apps that help make the music listening experience even cooler. There is a Rolling Stone app, a Billboard app, a last.fm app and a bunch of other really cool and useful apps.

I’ve explained how exactly the service works, from the free to paid options in a previous post, so I wont bore you with those details again. If you would like to learn more, you can read the previous blog post at the link below:

Or you can go to:

Anyway, on to the purpose of this post. Join Spotify if you already haven’t and enjoy the expansive universe of music available. If you have already joined and/or when you do, follow my Spotify account and check out what I’m listening to and take a listen to one of my MANY playlists. Hey, you never know I may even start doing special Volume 11 playlist just for you guys.

Keep in mind one of the flaws with Spotify is how it tracks your listsens. It puts up a list of your most listened to artists, albums and songs, but it can be very inaccurate. Right now it says my most listened to artist is currently Common, but I’ve been listening to far more Phil Collins, Matchbox Twenty and Grateful Dead, as of late. Also whatever music you actually own and is loaded into your computer, will automatically be loaded in to your Spotify library, but since artists like The Beatles, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin aren’t on Spotify they and other non-Spotify artists won’t be tracked, even if your listening to your own Beatles CD’s through Spotify. Otherwise you would see The Beatles and Pink Floyd on top of my listens list a lot. Anyway, follow my Spotify account by clicking the link below and then clicking Add To Favorites when you get to my account. Once you are following me, message me, so I can follow you back. We can start a great little community.:

Song Of The Day: 3/31/12 (Good Night)

Today has been such a busy day for me I was out for 12+ hours and just got home, just in time to get a song of the day posted for today before it turned midnight (and tomorrow), but I’m pooped so don’t have much energy to type too much. All I have to say is good night, which is why today’s song of the day is The Beatles’ “Good Night”.

Song Of The Day: 2/25/12 (#9. Pink Floyd) (Money)

Number 9 on my top 10 favorite artists/groups is the one and only Pink Floyd and today’s song of the day is their funky hit “Money”. I’ve been listening to Floyd since I was about 17 years old and with each passing year I grow fonder and fonder of them. I would have put them even higher up on my top 10, but to be honest other than “Dark Side Of The Moon”, “Wish You Were Here”, “The Wall” and a bunch of random songs from various other albums, I’ve never heard the majority of their discography, although I desperately want their new complete box set of all their albums. I can be a big sucker for box sets (being that I’m very much a completist) and I’m sure a box set doesn’t get much better and/or more epic than Pink Floyd’s. They made some of the most stunning, beautiful, rocking, mind blowing music ever recorded. I’m certain that once I get the chance to process their complete works, they will rise up 2 or 3 or maybe even 4 notches on my top 10. They are certainly my #2 favorite Classic Rock band after the Beatles. They always say every kid needs to discover the Beatles and Pink Floyd (among others). I’m so grateful that my ears are in tune to be able to fully appreciate all that Pink Floyd had and still has to offer the world. In July I will be seeing Rodger Waters (the mastermind behind much of Floyd’s most successful material) at Yankee Stadium, on his “Wall” tour. He will be playing the album “The Wall” in it’s entirety with grand theatrics to boot. Needless to say I can’t wait and I’m chomping at the bit to see him rip it up!!!

Song Of The Day: 2/24/12 (#8. Jamiroquai) (Virtual Insanity)

A few weeks back I shared a song from each of my top 7 favorite artists/groups as songs of the day. The artists were as follows #1 The Beatles, #1 Michael Jackson, #1 OutKast, #4 Kate Bush, #5 *NSYNC/Justin Timberlake, #6 Matchbox Twenty & #7 Billy Joel.  I decided that sharing my top 7 just wasn’t enough and that my #8 to #10 artists/groups more than deserve to be shared too. So coming in at #8 is the amazing, Jamiroquai!!! I absolutely love these guys and the pure, delicious funk they deliver time and time again. Most of you probably only know them for today’s song of the day “Virtual Insanity”, but they are very big around the world. Not so much in the U.S.A. which I’ll never understand. You may also know their song “Canned Heat” from the dancing scene in “Napoleon Dynamite”. Jamiroquai is what music is all about. Making you feel good!!! This song is only the tip of the iceberg for Jamiroquai. They have so many gems. I got their CD “Traveling Without Moving” back when it came out in 1996 and “Virtual Insanity” from it was a big hit. For many years (about 7) I never really listened to the album. I was going through my CD collection in high school and disposing of bad and emarrasing CDs, when I came across this CD and decided to give it one more listen before I tossed it. I fell in love with it instantly and needless to say kept it and have been a huge Jamiroquai fan ever since. Their smooth, fun, funky grooves also have helped me through some hard times. They always do the trick on really cheering me up and making me want to get down with my bad self.

3000 Is Coming……

At least a guy can dream huh? I and every OutKast/Andre 3000 fan has been waiting for a new album from both OutKast and Andre 3000 (solo) for almost 6 years now. The has been a very draining experience for the Kast faithful. For about 4 of those 6 years we were dragged along in the belief that Big Boi would release a solo album just about every month until it was FINALLY released back in July 2010 and boy was it worth the wait!!! Big Boi’s album “Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty” was in my opinion the best, most sonically charged and different album of that year along with Janelle Monae’s “The ArchAndroid”. Both albums were highly praised by critics and fans alike, yet got snubbed at all award shows for the big awards. They were among the top 3 highest rated albums of the year on Metacritic, a website that aggregates a score based off of all reviews that have been submitted on the alum from all major sources.

Anyway, I digress. In 2010 we finally got Big Boi’s album, but now we are still waiting on Andre 3000’s solo album……and OutKast’s album, but if Dre can drop his solo album, I can wait a little longer on an OutKast joint. Over the past 6 years, Andre hasn’t been totally in hiding. He has been featured on 21 tracks to date, teasing us 1 song at a time.

Here is a complete list of every song that has attempted to hold me over till Andre’s grand return:

1. DJ Unk – Walk It Out (Remix) feat. Andre 3000 & Jim Jones
2. Devin The Dude – What A Job feat. Andre 3000 & Snoop Dogg
3. Jay-Z – 30 Something (Remix) feat. Andre 3000 & Ice Cube
4. Lloyd – I Want You (Remix) feat. Andre 3000 & NaS
5. Rich Boy – Throw Some D’s (Remix) feat. Andre 3000, Jim Jones, Nelly, Murphy Lee & The Game
6. UGK – International Player’s Anthem (I Choose You) feat. OutKast
7. Fonzworth Bentley – Everybody feat. Andre 3000, Kanye West & Sa-Ra
8. Big Boi – Royal Flush feat. Andre 3000 & Raekwon
9. John Legend – Green Light feat. Andre 3000
10. OutKast – Da Art Of Storytellin’ (Part 4) feat. Marsha Ambrosius
11. Andre 3000 – All Together Now
12. Big Boi – Lookin’ For Ya feat. Andre 3000 & Sleepy Brown
13. Chris Brown – Deuces (Remix) feat. Andre 3000, Drake, T.I., Kanye West & Fabolous
14. Ciara – Ride (Remix) feat. Andre 3000 & Bei Maejor
15. Ke$ha – Sleazy (Remix) feat. Andre 3000
16. Beyonce – Party feat. Andre 3000 & Kanye West
17. Lloyd – Dedication To My Ex feat. Andre 3000 & Lil’ Wayne
18. Lil Wayne – Interlude feat. Tech N9ne & Andre 3000
19. Drake – The Real Her feat. Andre 3000 & Lil Wayne
20. Young Jeezy – I Do feat. Andre 3000 & Jay-Z
21. B.o.B – Play The Guitar feat. Andre 3000

Now don’t get me wrong these songs……at least Andre’s verses on them have all been awesome, but it’s not the same as having just him and an album of his genius. Big Boi and other sources close to Dre have alluded to the release of this long awaited solo album for years now, always saying it will be out this year and then the year comes and goes……and nothing, but I think this year is FINALLY the year. Andre seems to be everywherwe lately!!! Aside from ramping up his featurings lately. He has been appearing in commercials for Gillette. The commercials are below:

It seems to me he’s using these commercials and the increase of featurings to get himself back into the spotlight after so many years of laying low. Also Gorillaz, James Murphy and Andre himself have a song called “DaYaThing”, as part of a Converse “Three Artists. One Song.” campaign, being released on February 23rd!!! I REALLY think he’s coming back and SOON. I CAN’T WAIT ANYMORE!!! I have sat around SO many nights……and days imagining what his new album might be like, knowing that whatever I could think up would never touch the awesomeness that Andre 3000 has been cooking up and it seems that I will soon be able to feast my ears on the Dre Buffet!!! I just NEED some real music from one of my only living idols. Come on 3 Stax and hit us with what you got!!!
